Common questions about creating PAN card photos online
NSDL and UTI require PAN card photos to be 25×35 mm, which equals 295×413 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be white and the face should occupy 70–80% of the photo area. Our tool outputs exactly these dimensions.
JPEG (JPG) is the required format for online PAN applications. The file size should be under 100 KB for most portals. Our tool outputs a high-quality JPEG that meets these requirements.
Yes — the photo generated by this tool meets the specifications for both new PAN card applications and PAN card correction/reprint requests through NSDL and UTI portals.
Yes — upload, crop, adjust and download a PAN card photo with no cost, no sign-up, and no watermark.
No. All processing happens in your PHP session which is automatically cleared. No images are permanently stored on our servers.
PAN card applications in India are processed through two authorised portals — NSDL (now Protean) and UTIITSL. Both have slightly different photo specifications. Using the wrong dimensions or file size is the most common cause of PAN application rejection. Here are the exact requirements for both portals:
| Specification | NSDL / Protean Portal | UTIITSL Portal |
|---|---|---|
| Photo size (mm) | 25 × 35 mm | 35 × 25 mm (landscape) |
| Pixel dimensions | 295 × 413 px | 213 × 213 px |
| Resolution | 300 DPI | 200 DPI minimum |
| File format | JPEG / JPG | JPEG / JPG |
| Maximum file size | 50 KB Strict | 30 KB Strict |
| Background | Plain white | Plain white |
| Face coverage | 70–80% of frame | 70–80% of frame |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed | Neutral, mouth closed |

Make PAN Photo Free →Creating a PAN card photo at home takes under 60 seconds. No studio, no editing software, no cost. Follow these steps to get an NSDL and UTIITSL compliant photo on your first attempt:
Stand against a plain white wall near a window. Use your phone's rear camera. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and look directly at the camera.
Click "Choose File" and select your photo. Supports JPG or PNG up to 3 MB. Works on any Android or iOS phone, tablet, or desktop without any app.
Auto Crop centres your face instantly. Use Manual Crop for precise adjustment. Toggle Auto Enhance to fix lighting, brightness, and colour balance.
Download your PAN photo as JPEG at 295×413 px. No watermark, no registration. File size is automatically kept under 50 KB for direct NSDL portal upload.
Once your photo is ready, applying for a PAN card online takes about 15 minutes. Visit onlineservices.nsdl.com and select "New PAN — Indian Citizen (Form 49A)". Fill in your personal details, upload your photo (25×35 mm, under 50 KB JPEG), signature (under 30 KB), and Aadhaar as proof of identity and address. The fee is ₹107 for delivery to an Indian address. After payment, you receive an acknowledgement number to track your application. The physical PAN card arrives within 15–20 working days; the e-PAN is available for download within 48 hours.
The NSDL and UTIITSL portals validate your photo automatically before accepting the application. These are the most frequent rejection reasons and how to avoid them:
The NSDL portal strictly rejects photos above 50 KB. WhatsApp-forwarded photos often balloon in file size unpredictably. Our tool outputs under 50 KB automatically.
Off-white, cream, or light grey backgrounds fail automated checks. Even a slight colour tint causes rejection. Our tool enforces pure white (#ffffff).
NSDL expects 295×413 px. Uploading a passport-size (413×531 px) or Aadhaar-size photo causes a dimension mismatch error on the portal form.
If your face covers less than 70% of the photo, the portal's face detection may flag it. Our crop tool guides you to achieve the correct 70–80% face coverage.
Sharing photos via WhatsApp heavily compresses them and introduces artefacts. Always download directly from this tool without forwarding through messaging apps.
Overhead lights and close walls create shadows that fail biometric checks. Stand 2–3 feet from the wall and use natural daylight from a window in front of you.
While not strictly prohibited, glasses — especially with tinted lenses or glare — frequently trigger rejection. Remove glasses before taking the photo to be safe.
Technically both require white background photos, but the dimensions differ — PAN needs 25×35 mm (295×413 px) while Aadhaar needs 35×45 mm (413×531 px). You cannot use the same file for both portals as the portals validate dimensions. Use our PAN photo tool for PAN applications and our Aadhaar photo tool for Aadhaar updates.
For PAN correction (name, DOB, address change) or reprint, visit the NSDL portal and select "Changes or Corrections in Existing PAN Data". Upload a fresh photo meeting the 25×35 mm specification. The fee is ₹107 for Indian address delivery. You can also update your photo during a correction request even if no other changes are needed.
The e-PAN (digital PAN card) is available for download within 48 hours of successful application and payment. The physical PAN card is delivered by post within 15–20 working days to the address provided in the application. You can track your application status using the acknowledgement number at the NSDL portal.
Yes. Minors can have a PAN card — parents or guardians apply on their behalf using Form 49A. The minor's photo must be used (not the guardian's). Once the minor turns 18, the PAN details must be updated with a fresh photograph and signature. Our tool works for creating compliant photos for minors as well.
You need proof of identity (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence), proof of address (same documents or utility bills), proof of date of birth (birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or passport), and a passport-size photo. Aadhaar alone can serve as both identity and address proof for most applicants.
The fee for a new PAN card or correction is ₹107 (including GST) for delivery to an Indian address. For delivery to a foreign address (NRI applicants), the fee is ₹1,017. Payment can be made online via net banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI on both NSDL and UTIITSL portals.
If the portal rejects your photo, the most common fixes are: reduce the file size to under 50 KB (use our Image Compressor), ensure the background is pure white, check that dimensions are exactly 295×413 px, and make sure the face occupies 70–80% of the frame. Recreate the photo using this tool and all these will be handled automatically.
Yes and it is mandatory. All Indian citizens with both PAN and Aadhaar must link them. Link at the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) under "Link Aadhaar". Unlinked PANs became inoperative after June 2023. There is a late fee of ₹1,000 for linking after the deadline, but the PAN is reactivated within 30 days of payment.
