Image Compression FAQs

Everything you need to know about compressing images online

General Questions

Yes! Our basic image compression is completely free with no limitations. You can compress individual images up to 10MB with quality settings from 10% to 95%. Premium features like bulk compression and AI optimization are available for a one-time payment of ₹50 for 24-hour access.

No. We use session-based, in-memory processing. Your images are processed in temporary memory only, never written to disk storage, automatically deleted after 1 hour, and not shared with any third parties.

We support JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP for upload. You can compress and download in JPG, PNG, or WebP format.

Compression & Quality

Upload your image, set quality to 50–60%, enable resize and set width to 200px (for passport photos) or 300px (for exam photos), choose JPG format. This typically results in a file under 30KB. For UPSC, SSC, IBPS and railway forms, JPG at 50–60% quality with 413×531 px dimensions gives the best results.

85–95%: High quality, minimal compression — for professional photography and printing.
70–84%: Optimal balance — best for web use, our recommended setting.
50–69%: High compression — good for social media and small file requirements.
10–49%: Maximum compression — use only when file size is critical (e.g. government forms requiring under 30KB).

Free: compress one image at a time, standard algorithm, JPG/PNG/WebP output.
Premium (₹50 for 24 hours): bulk compress up to 20 images, advanced AI optimization, professional noise reduction, smart color correction, batch ZIP download.

Technical Questions

Yes! The tool works on all smartphones, tablets, and computers. Upload directly from your phone's camera roll or gallery and download the compressed image back to your device.

Free users can upload up to 10MB. Premium users can upload up to 50MB per image and compress up to 20 images in a single batch.

How to Compress Photo to Exact KB — Government Portal Reference 2026

Every Indian government exam and document portal has a different KB limit. Using the wrong file size causes instant rejection — the portal won't even show an error message in some cases. Use this table to find the exact settings for your portal:

Portal / ExamMax File SizeDimensionsFormatRecommended Quality
UPSC CSE / IFS 20 – 300 KB Flexible 413 × 531 px JPG 70–80% quality
SSC CGL / CHSL / MTS 20 – 50 KB Strict 100 × 120 px JPG 55–65% quality
IBPS PO / Clerk / SO 20 – 50 KB Strict 200 × 230 px JPG 60–70% quality
SBI PO / Clerk 20 – 50 KB Strict 200 × 230 px JPG 60–70% quality
RRB NTPC / Group D 15 – 100 KB Flexible 413 × 531 px JPG 65–75% quality
NSDL PAN Card Under 50 KB Strict 295 × 413 px JPG 60–70% quality
UTIITSL PAN Card Under 30 KB Strict 213 × 213 px JPG 55–60% quality
Aadhaar (UIDAI) Under 100 KB 413 × 531 px JPG 70–80% quality
Passport Seva (MEA) Under 1 MB Flexible 600 × 600 px JPG 80–90% quality
Police / SI Recruitment 15 – 40 KB Strict 413 × 531 px JPG 50–60% quality

Which Settings to Use — Quality, Size & Format Explained

The three controls that determine your output file size are quality, pixel dimensions, and format. Here is exactly what each one does and when to use each setting:

Quality 85–95%

Minimal compression. Near-original quality. File size reduces by 10–30%.

Best for: Printing, professional photos

Quality 70–84%

Balanced. Invisible quality loss. File size reduces by 40–60%.

Best for: Websites, WhatsApp, email

Quality 50–69%

High compression. Slight loss on close inspection. Reduces by 60–75%.

Best for: UPSC, Railway, Aadhaar

Quality 10–49%

Maximum compression. Visible artefacts. Use only when KB limit is very tight.

Best for: SSC, Police, UTIITSL PAN

JPG vs PNG vs WebP — Which Format to Choose

FormatBest ForFile SizeGovernment Portals
JPG Photos, document uploads, exam forms Smallest for photos Accepted by all portals ✓
PNG Screenshots, logos, images with text Larger than JPG Not always accepted — check first
WebP Websites, modern apps 30–40% smaller than JPG Not accepted by most Indian portals

For all Indian government exam portals, PAN card, Aadhaar, and passport applications — always use JPG format. It gives the smallest file size for photos and is universally accepted.

Image Compression — More Questions Answered

My photo keeps coming back above 50 KB even after compressing — what do I do?

Try these in order: (1) Enable the resize option and reduce width to the portal's required pixel width (e.g. 200px for IBPS, 100px for SSC). Smaller dimensions dramatically reduce file size. (2) Lower quality to 50–55%. (3) Make sure you select JPG format, not PNG — PNG files are much larger. (4) If still above limit, try quality 40–45%. At these settings the photo will still be clear enough for portal verification.

Can I compress a photo that has already been compressed?

Yes, but each compression cycle introduces additional quality loss. If your photo is already below target quality, compressing again will make it noticeably worse. For the best results, always start from the original high-resolution photo taken by your camera or phone, not from a previously compressed or WhatsApp-forwarded version.

What is the difference between compressing and resizing?

Compression reduces file size by lowering image quality (fewer bytes per pixel). Resizing reduces file size by shrinking the pixel dimensions (fewer pixels total). Both reduce KB — using both together gives maximum reduction. For government forms, you typically need to do both: resize to the required pixel dimensions AND compress to the required KB range.

Does compressing a photo change its pixel dimensions?

No — by default, compression only changes quality, not dimensions. The pixel width and height stay the same unless you explicitly enable the resize option and enter new dimensions. This means you can compress a 413×531 px photo to under 50 KB while keeping it at exactly 413×531 px, which is what most government portals require.

How do I compress multiple photos at once?

Bulk compression of up to 20 images at once is available with Premium access (₹50 for 24 hours). Upload all photos, compress them with consistent settings, and download all in a single ZIP file. This is useful for photographers, form-filling agents, and businesses processing multiple documents.

What is the best way to compress photos for WhatsApp without losing quality?

WhatsApp already compresses photos when you send them — usually heavily. To share a photo without quality loss, send it as a Document instead of as a Photo in WhatsApp. If you need to reduce size before sending, compress at 80–85% quality with dimensions around 1600px width. This gives good quality at a manageable file size.

Can I use WebP format for government exam portals?

No — most Indian government portals (UPSC, SSC, IBPS, NSDL, UTIITSL, UIDAI) only accept JPEG format. While WebP gives the smallest file sizes, it is rejected by these portals. Always use JPG format for official government form submissions.

Why is my PNG file so much larger than the same photo as JPG?

PNG is a lossless format — it stores every pixel without compression artefacts. This makes PNG ideal for screenshots and images with text, but terrible for photos. A typical passport photo saved as PNG can be 500KB–2MB while the same photo as JPG at 80% quality is under 100KB. Always convert photo images to JPG for the smallest file size.
